On 30 June 2011 the European Council announced the closure of negotiations pertaining to the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union following a proposal from the European Commission who also proposed that on 1st July 2013 Croatia should accede to the European Union. Croatia will become the 28th member state of the EU on the aforementioned date provided that no unexpected problems occur in the meantime.
